If I had to confine this review to just one word, it would be ‘nice’. (If you have read Macomber’s other books that were set in Cedar Cove, you may recognise a few characters I believe). The cover of this book has a sticker on it stating that Debbie Macomber has sold 150 million books worldwide, so I’m ashamed to say that this is the first book of hers I’ve read! Some thirty years before our story opens, she wrote a hugely popular book and has been living off the proceeds ever since. Mimi is a reclusive middle-aged woman who lives in a glass-walled mansion in the hills of California. Add to this the wonderfully skilled narration by Tavia Gilbert, and you’ve got a definite audiobook winner. Be Frank With Me is a delightfully charming story, peopled with characters that practically jump out of it and into your heart. Jackson is an author whose work I greatly admire, I decided to pick Ms. I first took note this début novel by Julia Claiborne Johnson after reading Joshilyn Jackson’s very positive review of the story. ![]() 6/24/2023 0 Comments The patriots by sana krasikov![]() ![]() This was all in the beginning of the Cold War. So begins Sana Krasikov’s debut novel, The Patriots, whichexplores how a Russian-American family’s experience with their motherland strains familial relationships. Those people were abandoned by their natural country and often executed as spies. She's been a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award and The New York Public Library’s Young Lions Fiction Award, and won the Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature. Once they realized their plight, they tried to come home, but the US would have none of it. Sana Krasikov is the author of the novel The Patriots and the collection One More Year. Instead they found repression, lies and later imprisonment. So, what did I learn? I had no idea that idealist Americans went to Russia as some sort of “salvation.” They went to a Communistic country looking for a way of life that was purer than what they had in the United States. And, the author portrays current-day Russia as quite corrupt. ![]() There is a lot of narrative and internal dialogue. Was she a traitor or someone caught in a very bad place? Would I have done what she did (very bad things) just to survive? I can’t answer these questions, but I can say, I found her refusal to leave Russia even after her release from prison, unbelievable. I continued to read just to see if Florence would ever win my approval. ![]() |
